COSHH Information For You

We have provided here some of the information you will need to manage your control of hazardous substances at work to prevent health issues.

What is COSHH?

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 (as
amended) gives guidance to employers so that they will be in a position to assess the risks from the use of hazardous substances. Included are employer’s arrangements to react to accidents and emergencies, plus other such incidents that result from serious spillages.

1. assessment must also include the health and safety risks arising from storage, handling or disposal of any of the substances

2. control exposure to such substances if preventint exposure is not possible

3. ensure staff are provided with information, instruction and training about the risks, steps and precautions the employer has taken to control these risks. Also to provide those who come in contact with substances with access to eye protection and other safety equipment.

Most Common Types of Substances

The most common types of substances are: chemicals, products containing chemicals, fumes, dusts, vapours, mists, nanotechnology, gases and asphyxiating gases, biological agents (germs), germs that cause diseases such as leptospirosis or legionnaires disease and germs used in laboratories.
